Rain, Snow & Humidity

May is generally dry and comfortable across most of Japan. Tokyo gets about 10 rainy days, but they're usually brief. Humidity is moderate at 60–65% — pleasant compared to summer.

Important: Okinawa's rainy season (tsuyu) typically starts in early-to-mid May, bringing heavy rain and humidity. The rest of Japan doesn't enter rainy season until June.

What to Wear & Pack

  • Light, breathable clothing: T-shirts, light cotton shirts, shorts or light trousers
  • Light layer for evenings: A cardigan or thin hoodie for cooler evenings (still around 14°C)
  • Comfortable walking shoes: Sneakers are perfect
  • Sunscreen and hat: UV is getting stronger — sun protection matters
  • Compact umbrella: For occasional showers
  • For Hokkaido: Still need a proper jacket — mornings can be 8°C

Travel Tips for May

  • Golden Week (Apr 29–May 5): First week of May is peak domestic travel. Everything is crowded and expensive. If you're on a budget, arrive after May 7.
  • Post-Golden Week sweet spot (May 7–31): Prices drop sharply, crowds disappear, and the weather is fantastic. One of Japan's best-value travel periods.
  • Fresh green (shinryoku): Japan's forests and gardens are at their most vibrant. Bamboo groves, temple gardens, and countryside are stunning.
  • Hokkaido cherry blossoms: If you missed sakura season further south, Sapporo and Hokkaido bloom in early-to-mid May.
  • Wisteria season: Purple wisteria flowers cascade at Ashikaga Flower Park (Tochigi), Kawachi Wisteria Garden (Kitakyushu), and many temple gardens.

Events & Festivals

  • Children's Day (May 5): Colorful carp streamers (koinobori) fly everywhere. Part of Golden Week.
  • Sanja Matsuri (mid-May): Tokyo's biggest and wildest festival at Asakusa's Sensoji shrine. Over 100 portable shrines paraded through the streets.
  • Kanda Matsuri (mid-May, odd years): Grand festival in central Tokyo near Akihabara.
  • Wisteria festivals: Late April through mid-May at gardens nationwide.
  • Aoi Matsuri (May 15): Elegant Heian-period procession through Kyoto. One of Kyoto's three great festivals.

Cost Considerations

  • Golden Week (May 1–5): Peak pricing — flights 50%+ above average, hotels 2–3x in popular areas.
  • Post-Golden Week (May 7+): Prices collapse. Flights return to average or below, hotels drop to normal rates.
  • Late May value: Excellent weather + low prices = one of the year's best deals.
  • Budget daily estimate: ¥8,000–12,000/day after Golden Week; ¥18,000+ during Golden Week
