Golden Week in Japan: Why You Should Avoid It (Or Plan Ahead)

Golden Week (late April–early May) means 2-3x hotel prices and massive crowds. Here's what to expect and how to plan around it.

Japan's Busiest (and Most Expensive) Week

Golden Week (ゴールデンウィーク) is Japan's longest holiday period, running from late April to early May (roughly April 29 – May 5). It's a cluster of four national holidays within a single week, and virtually the entire country takes time off. For tourists, this means higher prices, massive crowds, and fully booked hotels.

The Holidays

  • April 29 — Shōwa Day (昭和の日)
  • May 3 — Constitution Memorial Day (憲法記念日)
  • May 4 — Greenery Day (みどりの日)
  • May 5 — Children's Day (こどもの日)

Many Japanese workers take the days between holidays off too, creating a week-long vacation. Some companies shut down entirely.

How It Affects Your Trip

Prices Skyrocket

Golden Week dramatically inflates Japan trip costs. See our cheapest months to fly guide for better timing.

  • Hotels: 2-3x normal rates. A ¥10,000 hotel becomes ¥25,000-30,000
  • Domestic flights: Peak pricing, often 2-3x regular fares
  • Shinkansen: All reserved seats sell out weeks in advance
  • Ryokans: Premium rates and minimum stay requirements

Crowds Are Extreme

  • Popular temples in Kyoto have 2-3 hour waits just to enter
  • Bullet trains are standing room only without advance reservations
  • Restaurants have hour-long queues
  • Roads and highways experience 50+ km traffic jams

Things Close

Smaller shops, restaurants, and businesses may close for the entire week. While major tourist attractions and chain stores stay open, that hidden local ramen shop might not be.

Other Peak Periods to Avoid (or Plan For)

  • Obon (mid-August): Another major holiday. Similar crowds and prices, though more focused on domestic travel
  • New Year (Dec 28 – Jan 3): Many businesses close. Temples are packed for hatsumode (first shrine visit)
  • Cherry blossom season (late March – mid April): Hotels in Kyoto and Tokyo book up months ahead
  • Silver Week (mid-September): A shorter but still busy holiday cluster

If You Must Travel During Golden Week

  • Book everything 3-6 months ahead
  • Reserve shinkansen seats the moment they go on sale (1 month prior)
  • Visit less popular destinations — skip Kyoto for Kanazawa, skip Tokyo for Sendai
  • Go early — arrive at popular spots before 8 AM
  • Budget 50-100% more than normal for accommodation

For the best time to visit Japan on a budget, aim for shoulder seasons: mid-January to March, or mid-May to June.
