Cheap Beer in Japan: Konbini Drinks from $2

Beer in Japan is surprisingly cheap at convenience stores. Here's a price guide for konbini beer, izakaya drinks, and nomihoudai.

Japan's Best-Kept Budget Secret: Cheap Konbini Beer

Here's something that surprises almost every visitor: beer in Japan is incredibly cheap — if you know where to buy it. A 500ml can of quality Japanese beer from a convenience store (konbini) costs just ¥250-350 ($1.70-2.30). That's less than half what you'd pay at a bar, and the beer is excellent.

Konbini Beer Prices

Here's what you'll find at any 7-Eleven, Lawson, or FamilyMart:

  • Regular beer (350ml): ¥200-250 ($1.30-1.70) — Asahi, Kirin, Sapporo, Suntory
  • Regular beer (500ml): ¥270-350 ($1.80-2.30)
  • Tall boy (700ml): ¥350-400 ($2.30-2.70)
  • Happoshu (low-malt beer): ¥140-170 ($0.95-1.15) for 350ml — even cheaper!
  • Strong Zero (9% chuhai): ¥150-200 ($1.00-1.35) for 350ml — dangerously cheap and strong
  • Craft beer: ¥350-500 ($2.30-3.30) for 350ml

Bar and Restaurant Prices

Compare those konbini prices to drinking out:

  • Izakaya draft beer: ¥500-700 ($3.30-4.70)
  • Bar/pub beer: ¥600-900 ($4.00-6.00)
  • Craft beer bar: ¥800-1,200 ($5.30-8.00)
  • Nomihoudai (all-you-can-drink): ¥1,500-2,500 ($10-17) for 2 hours

The nomihoudai (飲み放題) system is a great deal if you want to drink at a restaurant. For a flat fee, you get unlimited drinks for 90-120 minutes. Most izakayas offer this, often bundled with food courses.

Drinking Culture Tips

  • Public drinking is legal — you can drink beer in parks, on trains, at the beach, anywhere. Hanami (cherry blossom viewing) parties with konbini beer are a beloved tradition
  • Vending machines sell beer — though they're less common than they used to be
  • Strong Zero warning — these 9% chuhai drinks are ¥150 and taste like fruit juice. They are notorious for catching tourists off guard. Pace yourself
  • No tipping — your bar tab is exactly what it says. No 20% surprise
  • Last trains — if you're drinking in the city, know when the last train leaves (usually 11:30 PM - midnight). Missing it means a pricey taxi ride

Best Budget Drinking Strategy

The savvy traveler's approach: grab a few beers from the konbini, enjoy them at your hotel or in a scenic park, then head out for one or two drinks at an izakaya to soak up the atmosphere. This way you get the social experience without blowing your budget.
