Japan Taxi Costs: Why They're Expensive & Cheaper Alternatives

Taxis in Japan start at ¥500 and add up fast. Here's a fare guide, when taxis make sense, and cheaper ways to get around.

Taxis in Japan: Spotless, Polite, and Pricey

Japanese taxis are an experience in themselves — automatic doors, white-gloved drivers, immaculate interiors, and guaranteed polite service. But they come at a cost. Taxis in Japan are among the most expensive in the developed world, and a ride that looks short on the map can add up fast.

How Much Do Taxis Cost?

Rates vary slightly by city, but here's the typical Tokyo pricing:

  • Base fare (flagfall): ¥500 ($3.30) for the first 1.096 km
  • Per distance: ¥100 ($0.67) for every additional 255 meters
  • Time charge: ¥100 for every 1.5 minutes when stopped or moving slowly
  • Late-night surcharge: 20% extra between 10 PM – 5 AM

RouteDistanceApprox. Cost
Shibuya → Shinjuku3 km¥1,200-1,500 ($8-10)
Tokyo Station → Roppongi5 km¥2,000-2,500 ($13-17)
Shinjuku → Asakusa10 km¥3,500-4,500 ($23-30)
Narita Airport → Central Tokyo65 km¥20,000-25,000 ($133-167)
Haneda Airport → Central Tokyo20 km¥6,000-8,000 ($40-53)

That Narita-to-Tokyo taxi fare is not a typo. Always take the train or bus from the airport.

When Taxis Make Sense

Despite the cost, there are situations where a taxi is worth it:

  • Missed the last train — the alternative is waiting until 5 AM or paying for a capsule hotel
  • Splitting with 3-4 people — suddenly it's only ¥500-1,000 per person for short rides
  • Heavy luggage — getting from the station to your hotel with big suitcases
  • Rainy days — when walking isn't appealing and buses are crowded
  • Rural areas — where trains and buses don't reach your destination

Cheaper Alternatives

  • Trains/subway: ¥170-300 ($1.10-2.00) for most city rides — 5-10x cheaper. Get a Suica or Pasmo card for tap-and-go convenience
  • Buses: Flat ¥210 ($1.40) in most cities
  • Airport buses: ¥1,000-3,000 to/from airports
  • Ride-sharing: GO (Japan's taxi app) sometimes offers shared rides at lower rates
  • Walking: Japan is incredibly walkable, especially in city centers

Tips for Taking Taxis

  • Don't open the door — it opens automatically (and closes automatically too)
  • Show your destination on Google Maps or a hotel card — many drivers don't speak English
  • No tipping — it's not expected and can cause confusion
  • Most accept credit cards and IC cards now, but some only take cash
  • Use the GO app to hail taxis — it shows the fare estimate upfront
