Tokyo to Kyoto by Bullet Train: $92 and 2 Hours 15 Minutes

The shinkansen from Tokyo to Kyoto costs about $92 one-way. Here's everything you need to know about booking, timing, and saving money.

The Tokyo to Kyoto shinkansen (bullet train) is one of the most popular routes in Japan — and for good reason. In just 2 hours and 15 minutes, you'll travel 476 km at speeds up to 285 km/h. The cost? About ¥13,320 ($92) one-way for a reserved seat on the Nozomi.

Should You Get a JR Pass?

If you're doing a round trip Tokyo–Kyoto, a 7-day JR Pass costs ¥50,000 ($345). That covers both directions plus unlimited JR travel for a week. If you're making at least one round trip plus a couple of day trips, the pass pays for itself.

Important: The JR Pass does NOT work on Nozomi trains. You'll take the Hikari instead (just 25 minutes slower). Read our full JR Pass guide to see if it's worth it for your itinerary.

How to Buy Tickets

  • At the station: Use the green ticket machines (みどりの窓口) or staffed ticket counters. English menus available.
  • SmartEX app: Book and pay on your phone. Very convenient, sometimes offers early-bird discounts.
  • Online via JR: Book up to a month in advance at eki-net.com or smartex.jp

Tips for the Journey

  • Sit on the right side (seats D/E) heading to Kyoto for views of Mount Fuji on clear days (best between Shin-Yokohama and Shizuoka)
  • Buy an ekiben (station bento box) for ¥800-1,200 — eating on the shinkansen is a beloved Japanese tradition
  • Trains depart every 10 minutes during peak hours. No need to stress about a specific departure
  • Luggage: There's overhead space and behind-seat storage. Reserve luggage space for oversized bags (free, but required since 2020)
  • Free Wi-Fi is available on most Tokaido Shinkansen trains

Budget Alternative: Highway Bus

If you're on a tight budget, overnight highway buses run Tokyo–Kyoto for ¥3,000-6,000 ($21-42). The journey takes 7-8 hours. Companies like Willer Express offer comfortable seats with privacy hoods. You save on a night's accommodation too!
